Hardwood floors

Hardwood floors are one of the most important design elements in your home or business. No matter what your lifestyle, wood floors add value and comfort to any décor, but with all the choices available today, how do you know which kind of wood flooring will be right for you? No other flooring offers the warmth, beauty, and value of wood. Wood flooring enhances the decor of any room, and provides timeless beauty.

Solid Wood Flooring
Solid wood flooring comes in three main types. Each type is available in both an unfinished and a pre-finished version. Unfinished flooring must be job-site sanded and finished after installation. Pre-finished flooring is sanded and finished at the factory -- so it only needs installation. The three main types of solid wood flooring are:

1: Strip flooring - This type of flooring is denoted by the thickness and width of the wood planks. Strip flooring has a set width, but the thickness can vary. Strip flooring ranges in thickness from 5/16 of an inch to 3/4 of an inch wide. It is available only in widths of 1 1/2 inches, 2 inches and 2 1/4.inches.

A light colored hardwood that has been used for flooring, decoration and furniture in historic homes and public buildings for many generations. With its typically pale-biscuit and contrasting warm brown colorings, ash is as big a favorite today as it has been with past generations. Its appeal, with today's discerning and proud home owners, lies in its particularly pronounced distinctive grain- especially where crown cut character feature. As well as looking good, today's floors are expected to stand up to every eventuality You'll probably know birch as the tree with the thin peeling bark most spectacularly seen in the silver birch variety. But Birch has long been used in furniture manufacture and is now a popular flooring choice. It has a fine, generally straight grain pattern and sometimes shows very small pin knots. Whether its the creamy yellow of the sapwood-for a light clean look or the rich reddish-brown of the heartwood - for a more elegant warmth, birch provides its supporters with the opportunity to express a truly individual style. A reddish colored hardwood that is a current flooring favorite because it represents a lovely 'figured' pattern on its face grain and finishes to a silky luster. Cheery is a medium-to-hard wood and has been described as having the 'warm color of cognac' that darkens slightly with time to become even more strikingly beautiful. Occasional clusters of tiny knots, or very small dark streaks set cherry apart from other hardwoods. Both these natural ( and permissible) characteristics result in flooring which is truly unique with every finished floor having a 'look', all of its own Canadian maple is regarded for its resistance to abrasive wear and is very much a flooring favorite because of its finishing and appearance characteristics. Initially very light in color, it 'matures' with time, to a delightful honey shade. The maple tree is thought, by many, to be the most beautiful tree in the forest and its timber produces flooring with a clearly defined grain that is equally as beautiful. Because of its relatively high impact resistance, maple is a natural choice for use in sports halls and on other commercial projects, which is why it is also the perfect surface for today's busy, mobile family.Oak is a traditional favorite and probably the world's most popular light colored timber, chosen by most, for its durability and beautiful patterning. This species of the Oak family is called 'red' because of the rich red color the trees leaves turn to in the autumn. It produces flooring similar in general appearance to white oak, but with a slightly less pronounced figure and, although traditionally not quite as popular as its 'white' sister, it has become more popular, as the current fashion for light colored, hardwood flooring has grown Generally it is oak's pronounced grain that catches the eye and distinguishes its wood from all other hardwoods. White oak is characteristically more fine grained and displays a more grey-brown color that its 'red' sister and it also traditionally been more popular of the two species over the years - it can still be found in the furnishings and decor of country and stately homes. Today, it is a popular choice with kitchen designers, cabinet makers and furniture manufacturers and of course is a firm favorite for flooring The 'Rolls Royce of cabinet woods' walnut produces flooring with a greater variety of figure characteristics than any other hardwood. Its light to dark chocolate brown colored flooring. A further walnut characteristic, the wood's more creamy sapwood, creates a stunning and brilliant contrast to the dark hues - giving every floor its very own, unique character. A walnut floor will stand the rigors of every day life with very little, serious maintenance.

2: Plank flooring - Plank flooring only comes in two thicknesses, but unlike strip flooring, the widths can vary. It is available only in thicknesses of 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch and a range of widths from 3 inches to 8 inches.

Strike precisely the right note with its reddish hue and 'figured' pattern that has been described as possessing the 'warm color of cognac'. It will darken slightly with time to become even more strikingly beautiful. Occasional clusters of tiny knots and small dark mineral streaks set it apart from other hardwoods Count on its relatively high impact resistance to deliver a superb surface for most things that today's budding train drivers can throw at it. A floor with creamy white hues, sometimes with a slight reddish brown tinge, that features a straight, neatly defined coarse grain and an even texture Mellow morning moods match those of contemporary tastes with flooring that reflects tradition, elegance and period-style living. Probably the worlds most popular light-colored wood favored for its straight grain, medium to coarse texture and clearly defined warm coloring. Create the perfect first impression with our most popular dark-colored flooring while welcoming-in the beauty of nature though Walnut's mix of figure characteristics, its palette of chocolate browns and creams and its occasional purplish casts

3: Parquet flooring - Parquet floors have a very different look from typical hardwoods. They are made up of geometrical patterns composed of individual wood slats held in place by mechanical fastening or an adhesive.

            Glue Down Hardwood Floors

Glue down installations comprise a large segment of the hardwood flooring business with the vast majority being of the engineered variety. They are often used in situations where concrete sub floors are king in residential and high rise applications. These installations generally take longer than most prefinished nail downs depending on the material width selected. Glue down installations can be walked on the following day and furniture can be moved in as well. Some items to consider for glue down wood floors are sensitivity to the adhesives used. The types used today are greatly improved from those of only five years ago when trichlohydrates were commonly used; a strong lingering odor that would sometimes take weeks to dissipate. Now the more common types are urethane and acrylic based that don't pose the reactions of older ones. Some of the premium types would be Bostiks, Taylor, Franklin, and Dritac. Unfortunately gluing hardwood floors are most prone to failure over all others. Some of the more common reasons include; improper adhesives used, improper/no floor preparation, or not enough applied that results in de-bonding of the material from the sub floor. This is why any glue down installation should be performed by someone that has the experience and know how.

Amongst the worlds most durable timbers with the highest durability rating for a hardwood. Add stability, strength and an attractive red, reddish-brown or pinkish color with the occasional black streak and it's easy to see why Teak is such a popular flooring hardwood. Mellow moods that reflect the contemporary tastes for flooring that reflects tradition, elegance and period style living. Offers a great deal more than just its popular light color. Also favored for its straight grain, medium to coarse texture and clearly defined warm tones. The perfect solution for those who favor a darker, richer colored floor. A very popular furniture, flooring and staircase wood. Its uniqueness comes from its salmon-red to orange brown color which deepens with age to a rich chestnut, and its irregular grain Count on its relative high impact resistance to deliver a superb surface perfect for the rigors of regular and heavy use. A floor of creamy white hues, sometimes with a slight reddish brown tinge, that features a straight, neatly defined coarse grain and an even texture Featuring a fine and even texture and a typically straight grain this is a timber that has a very strong traditional furnishing and flooring heritage. Can be used to harmonize perfectly with all forms of design and it is as much at home in a new millennium interiors as it is with more traditional decor. With its reddish hue and figured pattern cherry has been described as possessing the warm color of Cognac. It will darken slightly with time to become even more strikingly beautiful. Occasional clusters of tiny knots and small dark mineral streaks set it apart from other hardwoods.
