I am your stone mason Mine is one of the oldest professions and the most powerful. I created pyramids and towns, cathedrals and aqueducts. Without us, there was nothing truly durable. I am part of the earth. I am your stone mason. I am the strongest of the tradesmen. Quarrying stone is backbreaking work. Many of us died creating the monuments that last forever. Those of us who survived, acquired the strengths of stone in our dna. Many perils. A mistake means crushed limbs, broken bones. Inhaling rock dust contaminates our lungs. But our pride knows no bounds. I am your stone mason. The earth gives us our building materials, created through intense pressure, heat, and eons of time. I build for eternity. The pyramids I and my fellow masons created last to this day. Sometimes I polish stone and you get a wonder like the TajMahal. other times, I leave the stones as they are. I look from the heavens and point to our accomplishments. I and my fellow masons form societies and think our own thoughts. I know the secrets of engineering that no one else knows. I long to know other secrets. I have endured extreme weariness and come through with muscles of stone. I offer much to your home. I am your stone mason. I can build an arch as an entryway to your property. Our stone walls demark your property lines and serves as protection from prying eyes. Sometimes your entire home is built of stone, sometimes only a fireplace. I offer you beauty and durability. I thank the earth for giving such a variety of colors and textures to work with. Introduction to Atlanta, Georgia Founded in 1837 as Marthasville, Atlanta is a city of over 420,000 people. It is the largest city in Georgia, as well as the state's capital. According to U.S. census estimates, the Atlanta metropolitan area is the ninth largest metropolitan area in the United States with a population of over 4.7 million people. Atlanta is located in north/central Georgia. It is home to over 10 Fortune 500 companies, including household names such as The Coca-Cola Company, Delta Airlines, Home Depot, and UPS. In fact, as of 2005, the Atlanta metropolitan area was ranked third behind New York and Houston on the list of cities with the most Fortune 500 headquarters. Atlanta was ranked as the fourth "Most Fun U.S City" in a survey conducted in 2003 by Cranium Inc. Factors taken into account in the ranking include the number of sports teams, restaurants, dance performances, toy stores, the amount of a city's budget that is spent on recreation, and other factors. Atlanta History Atlanta was founded in 1837 as Marthasville at the end of the Western & Atlantic railroad line. It was officially incorporated as Atlanta in 1847. At that time, Atlanta consisted of little more than 30 stores, a few hotels and schools, one church, and approximately 2,500 residents. Some key dates in Atlanta's history include:•In 1838, the forced march of 15,000 Cherokee Indians west to Arkansas, known as the "Trail of Tears", began.•In 1861, Georgia became the fourth state to leave the union.•On September 2, 1864, after numerous battles around the city, Atlanta surrendered to Union Troops. Two months later General Sherman ordered the city burned.
